Direct evidence of the preventive effect of milk replacer–based probiotic feeding in calves against severe diarrhea

Diarrhea is a major cause of death in calves and this linked directly to economic loss the cattle industry. Fermented milk replacer (FMR) has been used widely clinical settings for calf feeding improve its health growth. However, protective efficacy FMR on diarrhea remains unclear. In study, we verified preventive effects using an experimental infection model bovine rotavirus (BRV) newborn field study dairy farms with diarrhea. addition, evaluated lactic acid bacteria-supplemented (LAB-MR) model. infection, fed or high-concentrated LAB-MR had diarrhea, but water content feces was lower more stable than that normal replacer. The amount intake also decreased temporarily, recovered immediately FMR– LAB-MR–fed calves. As compared control calves, showed less severe reduced histopathological lesions enteritis intestinal mucosa. significantly incidence enteritis, mortality from duration series treatment number consultations, cost medical care disease.
